Birthday Blog: Nev On His Birthday - Some Words Of Wisdom About Ageing From An NLP Perspective

What is time? What is ageing? What is death?

It's been great to spend an hour out of my day to write about ageing. I'm totally comfortable with the ageing process and, while we're on the topic, why death doesn't scare me any more like it used to.

On March 4, 2010 Purdue University wrote about a research study and it said, "You are only as old as you feel." In 1995 researchers asked 500 people aged 55-74, "How old do you feel?" Then they asked the same question to the same people in 2005. What researchers noticed was that the younger you feel, the better you age. People who felt the youngest had maintained their cognitive abilities better than people who felt older. In 1995 when people were also asked, "how old do you feel?" The majority said they felt 12 years younger than they were chronologically. These same people also had greater confidence about their cognitive abilities 10 years later.

So! That means subjective age is more important than chronological age to determine HOW you age. Turns out, it IS all in your mind!

When I was a young teenager, I used to pity the thought of ageing. Then, as I got older I met some much older people who were healthy and happy, and in some cases looked 10-20 years younger! They were even doing extreme sports.

True, much of it has to come down to your diet and lifestyle. I personally don't believe that genetics has anything to do with it. As I sit here writing this blog on the 29-Jan-2019, my 35th birthday... I can honestly say that I feel no different to what I did on my 21st birthday. I still feel 21. I'm actually fitter and stronger now (not just physically, but emotionally too!) If you asked me to take a time machine back to 21 years old, I'd have to say "no!" My life is actually better now.

My personal belief is, how you visualise yourself in your own mind, and how you visualise your abilities, determines how you age. Meditation/Hypnosis helps with this process. We know from our studies in hypnosis that there are 4-classifications of brain waves when measured by electroencephalograms (EEG's):

- Beta 12 - 35 Hz (Wide awake state - high frequency waves)

- Alpha 8 - 13 Hz (Best state for hypnosis/meditation)

- Theta 4 - 8 Hz (Lucid state - still good for hypnosis and also physical healing)

- Delta 0.5 - 4 Hz (Flat out asleep - comatose)

When you're born, as a baby your predominant brain activity sits in delta. Between the age of 2-6 years old, the predominant brain activity is in theta. A hypnotherapist drops their clients into the Alpha/Theta range to make their clients more amenable to positive suggestions.

Leading on from this, I think what this means is that it's a very noble pursuit as an adult to practise hypnosis/meditation; to learn the art of dropping your brain activity into alpha/theta! Doing this, you literally bring out your inner child - your creative side. You invigorate the part of you that impacts your bodies cells and it's many functions. My opinion is, in doing this, you slow down the ageing process.

Of course, we can not STOP the ageing process. But what if daily hypnosis/meditation can keep our mind flexible, open to new experiences, and help us to remain in activities for longer? But most of all... FEEL younger. It's all about how you FEEL. If you're 50 years old, but feel 30... Isn't that a great deal better?

We also know from the pioneering work of Deepak Chopra, that we have a new physical body approximately every 1-2 years. In fact, his research suggests:

- 98% of the atoms in the body turn over every year

- You have new soft tissue in 3 months (including muscles and internal organs)

- You have a new liver every 6 weeks

- New skin every 4 weeks

- New stomach lining every 5 days

- Bones can take a year to replace themselves, sometimes longer according to your metabolism

Since Deepak Chopra also proved that neurotransmitters bath every cell in the body (chemicals sent from the brain throughout the body), this means being able to control and influence your unconscious mind has everything to do with how your cells age. Remember, you don't consciously rebuild and regenerate the 98% of the cells in your body every year. You do it unconsciously!

It seems this unconscious mind of yours is something worth exploring! Have it on your side. Then you can age any way you want.

... and as for death... I used to be scared of ageing and dying. It's a common fear, especially in children. Just remember, in your body you have energy. In physics and chemistry, the law of conservation of energy states that the total energy of an isolated system remains constant; it is said to be conserved over time. This law means that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; rather, it can only be transformed or transferred from one form to another. Our universe is a giant vacuum (an isolated system). To my way of thinking, this means we are infinite beings. The secret lies in recognising the fact that you always were, always have been... and always will be. The future is very bright!
